GALERIES LAFAYETTE

40, Boulevard Haussmann (9th arrondissement)
Metro: Chaussée d'Antin, Opéra, La Fayette
RER: Auber
Hours: 9:30am - 8:00pm Monday to Saturday (Thursdays till 9:00pm; closed Sundays)

The jewel of Parisian department stores and flagship of the international franchise, this is first and foremost a spectacular shopping venue. It is housed in a 10-story Art Nouveau building of architectural gusto, renowned for its imposing glass dome.

The majestic store actually spreads over 3 buildings offering international designer fashion and cosmetics, jewelry and luxury goods, a wedding boutique and gourmet market. This has been by far the most profitable department store in the Western hemisphere.

Men, women, juniors and kids fashion are all "dernier cri" (the latest trends), and displayed in distinctive sections, as are home furnishings, electronics, compact discs, etc.

If the weekly cutting-edge fashion show (Fridays at 3:00 pm) is not your cup of tea, surely the roof-top terrace restaurant will seduce you.

Each year, Galeries Lafayette also organizes a supermodel competition with the Ford modeling agency, and a "Designer's Lab" new designer spotlight.

At christmas time, the store delights Parisians with holiday decorations and magnificent light displays, further cementing its place in the cultural heritage of the city.

Flanked by its arch-rival Le Printemps on Paris bustling Boulevard Haussmann, "the Galleries Lafayette" as some of my anglophone friends call it, cannot afford to lag behind trends. Thus, you will find awe-inspiring creativity with both giant retailers.

The Lafayette team is keenly aware of the importance of the fashion and arts connection, especially in the demanding Paris scene, and they will stop at nothing to maintain their competitive edge over the historical competitiveness of their neighbor.

In the video below, what you will see is, not their renowned weekly fashion show, but an art show put together for an appearance at the Fashion and Art at Cannes Shopping Festival.

It is a summer and beach collection with treatment by Calvin Klein, Gaastra and other designers exhibited in front of a packed house on the French Riviera.
