French onion soup recipe you can impress with is exactly what I was hoping to give you here. Those who don't know or have never tasted this treat may wonder what is the big deal about some onion soup! We are counting on you to enlighten them through their taste buds and let them discover why this has been a favorite since Roman times.

It is widely reported that King Louis XIV the Sun King and King Louis XV were so enthralled by this tasty treat that some historians traced the popularity of the Soupe à l'Oignon au Gratin back to their royal table.

Not bad for a poor man's dish that initially emerged out of the fact that onions were cheap and easy to get or easily cultivated for bountiful crops. It's the little dish that could!



French Onion Soup Au Gratin

Ingredients for 4:

1 lb sliced onions
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
3 oz. shredded Swiss cheese
1 glass white wine
4 slices toasted French bread
Salt & pepper to your taste

Heat butter and oil in large saucepan; add onions and stir for 5 minutes over medium heat; add mustard and stir for 5 minutes; add wine and 4 (8oz.) cups warm water; add salt and pepper and bring to a boil; let simmer over low heat for 20 minutes.

Pour soup in heat-proof bowls and top each with toast; pile cheese on top of toast; broil in oven to melt and bubble cheese, then serve.

I found the chef on this video highly entertaining. I'm not sure who he is but if he doesn't find much success as a chef, I say he may have a chance as a comedian. I enjoyed his video and I hope you will too, while you pick up on a couple tricks of his for a flavorful French onion soup.
